Host Bishops Fend Off Monarch Challenge

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  The battle for the top spot in the USA South Athletic Conference's East Division came down to the final match Thursday at the Slick Family Tennis Center, with host North Carolina Wesleyan College earning the point to squeak by Methodist women's tennis, 5-4.

The Battling Bishops and Monarchs both entered the match at 4-0 in league play, vying for the top spot in the division that could allow the winner to host a divisional semifinal (April 24) that would send the winner into the USA South women's tennis championship match (May 1).

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist, 5-4
Records: Methodist 7-12 (4-1 USA So.), N.C. Wesleyan 7-6 (5-0)
Location: Slick Family Tennis Center; Rocky Mount, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The match victory came down to the players on the No. 2 singles court, Methodist's Toni Laney and N.C. Wesleyan's Giulia Zanetti.
  • To get to that point, the Battling Bishops won two of the doubles points and two of the first three singles matches to play to completion, but Methodist fought off the literal match point, down 4-2 in team scoring, with singles wins at Nos. 4 and 5.
  • Megan Kidd at No. 4 downed Julie Schoorsmans, 6-3 and 6-2, to bring Methodist to within a point, and Valeria Matute at 5-singles squared the match all up with her 7-6, 6-3 win over Talith Rowan.
  • That put the focus on the 2-singles court where Laney had won the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6. Zanetti, however, answered back with a service-break win, 7-5, to even their bout, then earned the third set victory, 6-1, that provided the match-winning point for her Bishops.
  • Providing the doubles point for Methodist were Jill Lawrence and Kamdyn Balko at No. 3, with a commanding 8-2 win.
  • The singles point that got the rally rolling for Methodist came in the first match to be completed, Olivia Ward's straight-set 2 and 2 win at No. 6.
