HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mary Baldwin was only able to bring three players to the Clayton Center on Sunday, surrendering forfeiture points at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, and in Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles.
- The lone doubles match was captured, 8-1, by Methodist's Owen Findley and Samir Tewari.
- In singles action, Hayden Holloway made quick work of his opponent at 1-singles, taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision for the initial singles point.
- Brent Edwards won next in straight sets, 1 and 0, at No. 3 followed by the final match of the afternoon, a 3 and 2 triumph for Bridger Warlick at No. 2.
- At Guilford, the Monarchs earned two of three available doubles points, getting wins from Henry Murray and Luke Laney at No. 2 (8-3) and Hayden Wilfong and Kayhahn Alikhani at No. 3 (8-2).
- The host Quakers picked up the first point in singles, at No. 2, but AJ Rogers tilted things back Methodist's way at the 5-singles spot, winning in straight sets, 3 and 4, for a third Monarch point in the match.
- Quinn McNamara added the fourth point with a 2 and 3 win at No. 6, and after Guilford added a win at No. 4, Trent Harner clinched the match for Methodist with a 4 and 3 victory at 3-singles.
- The final point of the match was from Jordan Theron at No. 1, with a 1 and 3 victory that was his seventh consecutive singles win.
SENIORS
- With the schedule complete, the Monarchs will bid adieu to nine seniors: Alikhani, Coleman Baker, Henry Blanco, Findley, Harner, Kyle Klinek, Laney, and Patrick Newsome.
- The senior class has been part of Monarch squads that played their way into two USA South championship matches (2018, 2019).
- The 2020 group had played 13 matches before the halt to the season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 2021 squad finishes in third place in the league standings -- normally a postseason spot in the conference playoffs, but continued ramifications of the pandemic forced an alteration of the tournament, allowing only the top two teams from the East and West Divisions to qualify for the postseason.
