Falcons Swoop in For Two

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Pfeiffer University grabbed both ends of a non-conference doubleheader against host Methodist softball Thursday afternoon. The Falcons won the first game, 6-2, and won Game 2 by a score of 8-0 in five innings.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 6-2; Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 8-0 (5 Inn.)
Records: Methodist 10-24; Pfeiffer 18-10
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

GAME NOTES
  • In the third inning of Game 1, Taylor Jones' run tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI from Taylor Bowen. Jones had hit a lead-off single and then stole second base.
  • However, the game came undone for Methodist when Pfeiffer scored five unearned runs with two outs in the sixth inning. The Falcons had a three-run homerun and a two-RBI double in the frame after an error allowed the leadoff batter to reach safely. Up to that point, Brittany Jones had allowed just two hits and four walks while fanning three from the circle.
  • The Monarchs were only able to respond with one run in the bottom of the sixth, with Heather Tsapp doubling to score McKenzie Lanphear from first base, who had reached on a walk.
  • Pfeiffer came out the gates of Game 2 with four runs in the first inning. The Falcons added another four runs in the third and fourth innings and held onto the shutout to force the mercy ruling.
  • Taylor Jones and Tsapp each had two hits in the first game. Bowen had a hit and a walk in Game 1.
  • Junker recorded a hit in each game, her leadoff single in the fourth inning of the nightcap breaking up a perfect game by Pfeiffer pitcher Caiti Mickles who would go on to allow only two more baserunners, via walks, in her 1-hit shutout victory.
