FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. In its final non-conference contest on the schedule, Methodist's women's soccer team battled through a short-handed situation for more than 87 minutes in powering its way past visiting and previously unbeaten Guilford College, 3-1, at Duggins Soccer Stadium.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Guilford, 3-1
Records: Methodist 3-1, Guilford 4-1
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- All the goals in the game were scored with Methodist a player down after a red card issued to Haley Strain at the 3:04 mark of the contest.
- Johnson's second career goal was a rocket of a shot from 30 yards out that cruised past charging Guilford goalkeeper Ady Franken, who had charged out far off her line, and into the left side of the frame. Natalia Marshall-Hewitt drew the assist on the goal in the 35th minute that lifted the Monarchs to a 2-0 lead.
- The game's first goal was a first-career-goal, headed in by defender Baylor Burch on a corner kick opportunity. In the 18th minute, Cheyenne Ferrin lined things up for the second of two consecutive corners, this second time lofting her cross perfectly over a crowded group at the near post and finding Burch, who had gained a fronted position on her defender coming off the back post, about two yards off the goal line for an easy header behind Franken.
- The Quakers came out of the halftime break with increased offensive pressure, and it paid dividends as Crystal Rivas curled a shot from the top of the box, getting the bounce off the inside of the left post to cut the Guilford deficit in half not even three minutes into second-half action.
- Methodist was able to gain back momentum after the Rivas goal, though, and eventually added an insurance marker in the 76th.
- This, too, was a header off a corner opportunity, and was also a career first. Maddie Hernandez' corner kick dropped into the mix near the top of the goal box where Alyssa Morrell beat a defender in the air and flicked a header inside the near post to notch goal No. 1 for the sophomore defender.
A LITTLE MORE
- Guilford actually rang up more shots in the first half (8-7), but in the end it was Methodist that won that battle (18-15), including an 8-7 edge in shots on goal.
- Methodist's strength with possession resulted in seven corner chances, while its defense allowed just three of those opportunities.
- Mary Newman (1-0) started in goal for Methodist and earned the win, making two saves in first-half action. Caley Justice took over at the start of the second half and made four saves against that one Rivas goal.
- The gritty game saw 21 fouls between the teams, including the one red card and five yellow cards.
