Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Monarchs, Eagles Play to a Draw

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist welcomed the Asbury (Ky.) University Eagles to Duggins Soccer Stadium for a non-conference men's soccer match Saturday morning, but both teams were inhospitable, refusing to allow even one goal through a 110 minutes of double-overtime 0-0 draw.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist ties Asbury, 0-0 OT2
Records: Methodist 1-5-1, Asbury 2-4-1
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite the scoreless outcome, the match was not bereft of opportunities for both squads.
  • In the 15th minute it was Methodist's Truls Ballo that put a shot on goal that Asbury goalkeeper Trey Miller had to stop, and then a minute later the Eagles' Hugo Manjarrez put one on frame at the other end that Cole Hupp saved.
  • The 23rd minute saw another Asbury chance but Hupp again kept the game scoreless.
  • The Monarchs had the initial scoring opportunity in second-half action, with a Collin Hinnant shot that Miller was able to keep out, but Asbury pressured in its attacking third minutes later forcing Hupp to come up with saves in the 63rd and 66th minute.
  • Hudson Zeisman nearly broke the deadlock nearing the end of regulation, only to have Miller add another save to his total, this one coming with a little more than two minutes remaining in regulation.
  • Asbury, twice, threatened to end the contest early in the first overtime period, cruising in from the right side with a breakaway that Hupp stopped for the first denial, and then 10 second later doing it again from an even closer Eagles attempt.
  • By the time the second 10-minute overtime period commenced, both teams were running on fumes, resulting in just a single shot in the period, one that sailed harmlessly wide.
THE NUMBERS GAME
  • Hupp finished the game with four saves for Methodist, while Miller ended the contest with two.
  • Both Ulises Sanchez and Zeisman registered game-high two shots apiece, though Asbury put more shots on frame, 6-3, than did the Monarchs.
  • The contest saw 15 set pieces off of corner kick opportunities, 9 by Methodist.
