Greensboro First Half Shooting to Much For Methodist

GREENSBORO, N.C. The Methodist men's basketball team could not overcome USA South Athletic Conference opponent Greensboro College first half shooting, on Monday night, as they lose 64-55 in Hanes Gymnasium.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Greensboro def. Methodist, 64-55
Records: Methodist 1-15 (0-6 USA South), Greensboro 7-12 (2-6)
Location: Hanes Gymnasium; Greensboro, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Upperclassman Kevin McLaughlin Jr. and Clayton Coe got the scoring going for the Monarchs with the team's first four points before a five minute drought by Methodist. During that time, the Pride tacked on 14 consecutive points for a 16-4 lead almost halfway through the first half.
  • The Monarchs got it back down to a single digit difference, 18-11, after the team had a mini 5-0 spurt, which included a three-pointer by Tomas Stevens. The best Methodist came back to the score in the first was when the score was 28-23 thanks to jumpers by McLaughlin Jr. and Dante Burden. A 5-2 run, in favor of Greensboro, during the final four minutes saw the Pride take a 33-25 advantage into the break.
  • Greensboro found themselves leading by double digits again, 48-32, after two separate 6-0 scoring spurts. Instead of letting this contest get out of hand, the Monarchs would slowly chip away the deficit starting with Brone Brinson making a layup and then getting the steal for the lay in to make it 52-38.
  • Seven minutes later, the combination of McLaughlin, Brinson, and Jeremy Mull got Methodist back to within seven points with 2:35 left on the clock. Burden made the score 61-55 off a bucket and free throw for what would be the closest the Monarchs got to the score before forcing the Pride to go to the charity stripe.
MORE TO IT
  • Greensboro would win the rebound battle by a difference of 46 to 30, including four different Pride players with five or more boards.
  • What helped Methodist to stay relatively close in the game was that they forced seven more turnovers than Greensboro, 21-14. That led to the Monarchs scoring nine more points off turnovers over the Pride, 19-10.
UP NEXT
  • Methodist returns to the March F. Riddle Center for the first time in a little over a week and half on Wednesday, as they host North Carolina Wesleyan College in a USA South battle at 7:30 p.m.
  • Greensboro will be off until Thursday when they welcome USA South companion William Peace University, with a 7 p.m. tip-off time.
