Methodist Offense Wakes Up Late in Close Loss to Brevard

BREVARD, N.C.  A sluggish start by the Methodist football team on Saturday afternoon as the team took on Brevard College. In this road USA South Athletic Conference game, the Monarch offense finally got going late in third quarter but it would be too little too late. The Tornadoes hanged on to beat Methodist by a score of 22-20 at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Brevard def. Methodist, 22-20
Records: Methodist 2-4 (1-2 USA South), Brevard 2-3 (2-0)
Location: Ives-Lemel Family Field; Brevard, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brevard won the opening coin tossed and chose to receive the ball first. This led to the Tornadoes scoring on their first drive of the contest with a Stamati Damalos 28-yard field goal, to put Brevard up 3-0.
  • The first two Methodist drives witnessed them go 3-and-out. This gave the Tornadoes a chance to go up 10-0 after a Mitchell Yoder 1-yard rushing touchdown. Brevard got the ball at midfield and a couple of Miles Hayes passes from good chunks of yards led to the Yoder score.
  • The Tornadoes were the only team to score in the second quarter. After a short punt by the Monarchs, a big 22-yard run by Yoder put Brevard in great field goal range. Once the Tornadoes could not convert on third down, Damalos was called up again for another 28-yard attempt. He kicked the ball right through the uprights to make it 13-0, which was what the halftime score would become.
  • Methodist offense continued to struggle to move the ball at the start of the third quarter. Things would turn around following an Isiah McMullens interception to give the Monarchs the ball back deep in Brevard territory. Three plays later, Methodist finally got on the board with a short touchdown pass from Brandon Bullins to Tyquan Eaddy, 13-7.
  • On the ensuing Tornado possession, Brevard got those points right back. A handoff to Chan Lee-Parker saw him keep his legs moving and breaking tackles for a 42-yard touchdown run. The Monarchs did block the point after touchdown attempt to keep the score at 19-7.
  • The next Methodist drive started off with a nice completion from Bullins to Mikhail Baldwin for 29 yards to get them on the Tornadoes side of the field. Another 16-yard connection to KJ Hicklin set the Monarchs up with first-and-goal at the one-yard line to start the fourth quarter. On the very next play, the ball was handed to Eaddy for the touchdown plunge, 19-14.
  • Methodist tried to make it a two-point game with a Trevor Hargett 30-yard field goal attempt but the kick went wide right. Later though, Brevard added three points to their score, 22-14, with a Damalos 39-yard field goal.
  • With 2:36 left on the clock, the Monarchs got the ball back with one final chance to tie the game. They would get the touchdown the team need off a Kobe Praylow one-yard rush, and on this drive, Methodist converted on three third downs and one fourth down during their 15 plays that covered 52 yards.
  • The score is now 22-20 and the Monarchs are now attempting their 2-point conversion to tie the game. Bullins rolled out to his right but nothing was open, so he turned around and saw open field back to his left. The only thing in Bullins way was the defender that coming at him. Bullins tried to side step him but he could and was tackled well short of the goal line.
MORE TO IT
  • The ground game was a big difference between these to squads. The Tornadoes rushed 39 times for 202 yards (5.2 yards per rush) while Methodist rushers carried 28 times and accumulated 59 yards (2.1 yards per rush).
  • For the third game in a row, Praylow led all receivers in receptions (10) and receiving yards (68). This brings his season totals to 59 grabs for 782 yards.
  • With McMullens (team-high nine tackles) interception, the Monarchs turnover streak continues at seven consecutive contests.
UP NEXT
Methodist is on the road again next Saturday when the team travels up the road to North Carolina Wesleyan University for a USA South game starting at 6 PM.
