Monarchs Suffer Setback in the Final Game of the Tip-Off Classic

DECATUR, Ga.  Methodist women's basketball faced another former USA South foe in Berea College on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference match. The Mountaineers got the better of the Monarchs in this contest with a 69-54 victory on the second day of the Agnes Scott Tip-Off Classic held in the Woodruff Gymnasium.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Berea def. Methodist, 69-54
Records: Methodist 1-1, Berea 2-0
Location: Woodruff Gymnasium; Decatur, Georgia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A low scoring first quarter saw Berea jump out to a six to nothing lead. Kiley Hicks scored the basket for Methodist but the Mountaineers kept extending their advantage to 10-3. The likes of Hicks, Aniyah Tate and Aneesa Irizarry helped the Monarchs finish the frame strong to tie the score up 12-12.
  • A 7-0 run by Methodist pushed the score to 21-14, in favor of the Monarchs, to start the second period. Berea came right back though by tallying the next 16 unanswered points, 30-21, to give the Mountaineers the lead again. Hicks and Tate scored the final five points for Methodist before the halftime break, which had 32-26 on the scoreboard.
  • The third quarter saw both sides exchange 7-0 runs to keep the score difference in the single digits, 42-35. During the final four minutes of the stanza, Berea narrowly outscored the Monarchs, 9-7, to make the score 51-42 heading into the forth.
  • Not much change in the score occurred until the Mountaineers score five straight points, 60-47. Methodist attempted to get back in this game but every time the Monarchs tried Berea seemed to have an answer to stop it. Five of the final seven Methodist points were scored by Tate, in the last five minutes.
STAT FACTS
  • Tied for the team lead in points were Hicks and Tate, with 16. It was Tate though that led the Monarchs in rebounds (8).
  • The Mountaineers took advantage of second change opportunities as they tallied 21 points off those extra chances while Methodist score eight points.
  • Tate also chipped in a team-high three steals.
UP NEXT
Methodist is off for the next week until Saturday when the team returns to the March F. Riddle Center to begin USA South Athletic Conference action. The Monarchs will play Southern Virginia University in their home opener with tip-off set for 4 PM.
