JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Chris. Newport def. Methodist, 82-59
Records: Methodist 0-5, Chris. Newport 5-0
Location: Freeman Center; Newport News, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist kept it close for the first five minutes of game, 10-7, before CNU started to pull away with a 12-0 run. That little over four minute scoreless spell would be lifted by a pair of free throws from T.J. East.
- With almost eight minutes left in the first half, a slam at the rim by Angel Dean got the Monarchs back to within single digits. The Captains did not allow Methodist to stay that close to the lead long, as a 9-0 run pushed it to an 18-point difference, 42-24.
- Even though the Monarchs were down 44-27 at the half, Methodist came out with new life and were able to trim the deficit back down to single digits, 48-37. CNU would go up by 14 again after a quick five-point swing to extinguish the Monarchs momentum.
- Methodist continued to try to chip into the Captain lead but for every bucket the Monarchs made, CNU would make the next two. The last type of any run by Methodist in the contest came with about six minutes left, as the Monarchs scored five points off a Clayton Coe three and a couple of free throws by Brone Brinson.
MORE TO IT
- In the painted area played a huge factor in several different categories. The biggest one of all was battle on the glass as the Captains doubled up on Methodist rebound total 48 to 24.
- CNU had five different scorers with 10 or more points in the contest. The Monarchs were led by East with 13 points.
- Last season the Captains led the nation in blocks and they looked to continue that trend tonight with a game-high 12, as a team. Methodist also rejected six shots in the game with Dean recording a season-high five.
