Records: Methodist 3-1 (2-0 USA South), Southern Virginia 1-4 (0-1)
Location: Varsity Gym; Winston-Salem, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Salem was up 6-1 and Methodist had not made a basket yet four minutes into the ball game, then Emmenia Lynch got the first field goal for the Monarchs with 5:34 left in the opening period. Methodist own Aneesa Irizarry and Lynch got it down to a two-point contest before a last second layup, as time expired, by Dionne Sampson gave the Spirits a four point advantage, 13-9.
- A three by Jessica Drake sparked a 12-0 run in a three and half minute span to give the Monarchs a 23-15 lead, the first by Methodist. Tamsi Echendu concluded the Salem drought with a lay in and that would lead to the Spirits scoring the next nine consecutive points to go back in front 24-23. The Monarchs still ended up with a 32-28 halftime lead after outscoring Salem 8-5 in the final minute and half.
- In the beginning of the third frame, the Spirits brought it back to within one but then a five point swing by Methodist pushed it back to a two possession contest again. Following a 6-0 run by Salem, Minnie Griffin nailed back-to-back threes for the Spirits to help her team take a 48-44 lead. Eventually Salem closed out the third with a 57-48 advantage.
- Aniyah Tate began the final quarter by tallying five of the next nine Monarch points to tie the game at 57-57. A costly technical foul by Cree Bass of Salem ignited a 7-0 run by Methodist to take a 65-59 lead midway through the stanza. The Spirits scored the next four points to make it 65-63 but one last push of six points by the Monarchs was enough to salt the game away.
