Monarchs Drop Season Opener to Quakers

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Methodist men's basketball opened up the 2022-23 season with a non-conference road game at Guilford College on Tuesday night. The host Quakers bested the Monarchs with an 80-59 victory in the Ragan-Brown Field House.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brone Brinson and T.J. East tallied 14 points for Methodist to start the new season. A layup followed by a three by Brinson were the Monarchs first five points before East registered the next nine to take a 14-8 advantage.
  • Guilford closed the gap on a 7-0 run to go up by two, 18-16, with about 12 minutes left. For the next six minutes of game action, four lead changes and five tie ups occurred in this back-and-forth contest.
  • Late in the first half, the Quakers scored 10 straight points, 36-26, to claim the largest lead of the period. An exchange of three-pointers by each side was how the contest went into the break, with Methodist down 31-39.
  • Back-to-back buckets by Clayton Coe and Angel Dean was how the Monarchs started the second half to cut it the score down to a four-point lead. The first three made baskets for Guilford though were all for three point range and the team chipped in four free throws to quickly make it a 14-point difference, 52-38.
  • Montell Moore of Methodist would get it back down to a single digit deficit, 56-48, with a made three. The next nine minutes were dominated by the Quakers as they outscored the Monarchs 25-14 in that span to take a commanding advantage.

  • Playing in his first game since the Covid-altered season, due to an injury, was East. The High Point, N.C., native led Methodist in both points (18) and rebounds (7).
  • Chances at the charity stripe played a huge factor. The Quakers were sent the free throw line a total of 30 times and gained 24 points from it. The Monarchs would only go to the line nine times throughout the game.
  • The battle of the board favored Guilford by a 43 to 30 margin. The Quakers nearly had three players with double digit rebounds, including two with a game-high of nine.
