Methodist Cruised to a Victory Over Mary Baldwin

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  On Thursday, Methodist women's basketball were on their home court taking on Mary Baldwin University. In this USA South Athletic Conference contest, the Monarchs defeated the Fighting Squirrels by a score of 64-41 inside the March F. Riddle Center.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Mary Baldwin, 65-41
Records: Methodist 6-2 (3-1 USA South), Mary Baldwin 1-8 (1-2)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist registered the first 13 points in the game before Codie Heilig made the first bucket, a three-pointer, for Mary Baldwin, which was little more than halfway through the first quarter. A slew of turnovers by both sides did not allow many more points to be scored as the Monarchs held a 16-5 advantage, at the end of the first.
  • Methodist dominated the second frame and the team ballooned the lead to 31-7 following a 15-0 Monarch run. Once again, the Fighting Squirrels Heilig knocked down a three to end the scoring drought. On the ensuing possession for Methodist, freshman Taliyah Hobson tallied her first collegiate points with a made jumper. The Monarchs went into the locker room with a hefty 33-12 lead.
  • A layup by Aniyah Tate put the first couple points on the board for Methodist to begin the third. After that the stanza witnessed a good amount of back-and-forth action throughout, as each side were exchanging baskets. Other than Tate (2 pts), the Monarchs got scoring contributions from Kiley Hicks (6 pts), Jillian Peterson (3 pts) and Ni'Jaa Wells (5 pts) in the quarter.
  • With a 49-22 leading into the final frame, a quick 6-0 run by Methodist pushed the difference to over 30 points. Mary Baldwin slashed into the deficit slight as Caroline Motley went on an 8-0 run herself over a two-minute span. As Jordan Langston recorded a couple of more baskets for the Monarchs, the Fighting Squirrels would close out the contest on a separate 7-0 run.
MORE TO IT
  • Outside of the first 12 seconds of game, Methodist led from start to finish.
  • Three different Monarchs preached double-digit scoring (Hicks, Peterson and Tate). Hicks led all scorers with a game-high 16 points.
  • Methodist controlled the battle on the glass. The Monarchs came down with 49 rebounds to Mary Baldwin's 26. It would be Mekayla Clarke of the Fighting Squirrels that led the game with 12 boards.
UP NEXT
  • Methodist wraps up the current five-game homestand on Friday when former USA South opponent Averett University takes a visit to Fayetteville. Game is schedule to tip-off at 5 PM.
  • Mary Baldwin will also be playing this Friday when the team travels to N.C. Wesleyan University for a 5 PM game, in a USA South bout.
