ROME, Ga. The USA South Athletic Conference on Monday afternoon announced its Student-Athlete of the Week awards, a listing that honored a couple of Methodist players.
Spencer Nelson as the league's baseball player of the week and
Brandon Humphreys was named the league's baseball rookie pitcher of the week
Nelson, a senior infielder from Plant City, Fla., had a fantastic day at the plate after going 3 for 4, with two 2-run home runs, in the first game of the double header sweep of Hood College. His two blasts over the fence along with the four runs batted in were new career-highs. The second game saw him collect two more extra base hits, a double and a solo HR, in three plate appearances and driving in three additional runners. He also drew a walk in the game.
The freshman from Fuquay Varina, North Carolina made his collegiate debut in relief and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out a batter. He was credited as the winning pitcher for the second game against Hood.
Methodist is back in action this weekend as they host the Diamond Invitational at Armstrong-Shelley Field, beginning on Friday at 4:00 p.m against Messiah University.
