Hall's 2-Run Homer Not Enough for the Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist baseball had a slow day at the plate on Tuesday afternoon, coming up three runs short to the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan University in a non-conference contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Virginia Wesleyan opened the first inning with three straight singles to load the bases. Kyle Molivas struck out the fourth batter to give the Monarchs their first out, but the Marlins tagged up on a sacrifice fly to left field to score their first run.
  • In the second inning, Virginia Wesleyan scored three more runs to extend their lead to 4-0.
  • After a slow first few innings, Jacob Austin registered the Monarchs second hit and the first run of the game after he led off with a double to left field and scored from second base following a homerun from Wesley Hall.
  • Methodist trailed by two runs (4-2) up until the top of the fifth, when the Marlins Connor Hall hit a double to left center to round his teammate from first base.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Austin and Spencer Nelson each hit singles up the middle to keep the bats alive, but after a pop fly to left field, the Monarchs left two ducks on the pond, coming up short 5-2 to the Marlins.  
STAT FACTS
  • Hall hit his first homerun of the season with two runs batted in and Austin led the team overall with two hits.
  • Rob Wilkerson drew a team-high two hit by pitches, while Stancil Bowles and Austin each drew one.
  • Methodist overall left 11 men stranded on base, including a bases loaded, two-out situation in the fifth inning.
  • Of the 35 at bats for the Marlins, the Monarch pitchers combined for nine strikeouts but allowed eight hits and five walks.
UP NEXT
This weekend (March 18 through March 20) the Monarchs will welcome William Peace University to Fayetteville, N.C. for a three-game series to kick off USA South conference play, beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
