Gavin Wheeler,
Jarrett Hall and
Aaron Nash have earned recognition from the USA South Athletics Conference, which released its (Feb. 28-Mar. 6) student-athlete of the week honors Monday afternoon.
Theron (men's tennis) and Wheeler (baseball) were both tabbed as the Player of the Week in their respective sports while Hall (baseball) earned Rookie Pitcher of the Week and Nash (men's track) earned Field Rookie of the Week.
Theron, a sophomore from Durban, South Africa went 2-0 in singles in his spring season debut on Saturday (Mar. 6) against Division I opponent, University of Richmond. He earned straight-set wins at both the No.1 and No.2 spots in the two separate team matches.
Baseball posted a 3-1 record last week as Wheeler, a graduate student from Fayetteville, N.C. went a combined 10-for-16 (.625) with a .579 on-base percentage and a .688 slugging percentage. Along with it, he posted three runs scored, six RBI's, one double, one walk and two stolen bases. In the Monarchs 12-4 win over Guilford, Wheeler went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, one RBI and a double. Methodist went 2-3 in the weekend series at Piedmont as Wheeler hit a combined 7-for-11 with one run scored, five RBI's, one walk and two stolen bases. In three out of the four games played last week, Wheeler had three hits performances.
Hall, a freshman from Newport, N.C. earned his first collegiate win after two relief appearances last week. He pitched a total of 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. He earned his win after coming in relief during the fifth inning of Game 2 at Piedmont, pitching three innings and striking out four batters.
In track and field's outdoor season opener at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Nash, a freshman from Powhatan, Va. competed in the men's high jump and long jump. In his freshman debut, he placed fourth in the high jump with an effort of 1.83 meters (6'0") while placing second in the long jump for a distance of 6.68m (21'11").
