Monarchs Walk-off Game 2 for a Sweep of Cougars

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist softball defeated Averett University twice on Saturday afternoon to complete the sweep, in USA South Athletic Conference play, by scores of 3-0 & 7-6 at Price Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs scored the first run of Game 1 in the third inning on a Bethany Junker hit down the left field line allowing Meaghan Himes to score a run, putting Methodist up 1-0.
  • In the sixth inning, Haven Williams reached first on a throwing error in which allowed Claire Cummings to score. The next at bat was Junker who hit a single to drive in Madison Sanchez from third, extending the lead to 3-0.
  • Averett got off to quick start in Game 2 by scoring three runs by the second inning. Methodist had gotten a spark in the bottom half of the third when Rebekah Haigler scored of a Kayleigh Raynor single. Haley Fethke then flied out scoring Williams followed by a walked in run during Maria Kollar's at bat to score Raynor.
  • The Monarchs struck the final blow in the bottom of the seventh with a Himes single that brought Kollar home to win the second game.
Stat Facts
  • Junker had the best day for Methodist as she went four for eight at the plate, while driving in two RBIs.
  • Brittany Jones pitched seven innings, only allowing four hits to go along with four strike outs and one walk for Game 1.

Methodist hits the road on Wednesday, April 6 to travel to Greensboro College for a 3 p.m. USA South doubleheader.
Averett is also on the road on Wednesday, April 6, and will travel to Mary Baldwin University for a 2 p.m. USA South doubleheader.
