FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The undefeated conference winning streak came to an end for Methodist women's tennis this afternoon, dropping a close match to USA South opponent Averett University on Saturday afternoon at the Gene Clayton Tennis Center.
The face off between both undefeated teams determined the No.1 and No.2 seeds going into the USA South Women's Tennis Tournament and based on the outcome, Averett will secure the No. 1 seed for the East while Methodist falls in at the No. 2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs took one of the three doubles matches as the pairing of Toni Laney and Jill Lawrence won 8-6 over opponents Inka Zeilstra and Keira Gunning.
- After the Cougars took a 2-1 advantage following the doubles matches, Methodist's Laney in the No. 2 slot secured the Monarchs' second point of the day after going into a super tie breaker (1-6, 6-0, 6-3).
- Lawrence backed up Laney with another point for Methodist to make it 3-3. Like Laney, Lawrence went into a super tie breaker after dropping the first set, 3-6 and coming back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-3.
- After Megan Kidd could not pull out the win over opponent Paula Ryhsen in the No. 4 position, Valeria Matute tied the team score back up at four all after defeating opponent Gunning in the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-2.
- As it came down to the final match of the day, Veva Willocks faced off against Alejandra Garcia at the No. 6 singles. Willocks gave Garcia a run in the first set, only losing 4-6 but was unable to take the advantage in the second set and lost 2-6.

Methodist concludes their regular season but will continue on to the USA South Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Tournament held in Rome, Georgia. The team has secured the No. 2 seed for the East and will compete on Thursday, April 28 against the No. 3 seed for the West, Huntingdon College in the quarterfinals at 10 a.m.
