After Big Strides in USA South Tournament Play, Monarchs fall to Lions

DEMOREST, Ga.  After fighting back and beating both Covenant College, 4-3, and Greensboro College, 1-0 (9 Inn.), on Friday in the USA South Athletic Conference Softball Tournament bracket play, the Monarchs face Piedmont University for the second time in the last three days. Unfortunately Methodist could not get the bats rolling in the game and lost 6-0 to the Lions.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • In the first inning, the Lions had a quick three-up three-down in the Monarchs first at bat. Following the three outs, Piedmont scored the first two runs of the game off three errors from the Monarch infield.
  • In the bottom of the second, Methodist had runners on first and second with two outs but a hit to the third baseman led to the forced-out tag at third.
  • The Lions scored their third run of the game in the top of the third from a double down the left field line to bring a runner at second base all the way home.
  • The Monarchs went cold at the plate in the third through the sixth innings as Piedmont allowed no hits.
  • The Lions went on to score one run in each in the last three innings to extend their lead to 6-0.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Methodist could only register two hits, resulting in a loss.
STAT FACTS 
  • Heather Tsapp led the team with two hits.
  • Piedmont out hit Methodist 11-4 and registered one error to the Monarchs three.
  • The Lions pitcher, Martina Maloch only recorded two strikeouts but limited the Monarchs to four hits, as she had a strong defense to back her up.
