THE ESSENTIALS
Final results:Â N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist 19-7
Records:Â Methodist 26-14 (16-5 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 25-15 (17-4)
Location:Â Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- Methodist struggled defensively in the opening frame as N.C. Wesleyan hit seven hits to score eight runs, right off the bat. The Monarchs had collected two outs before the eight runs were scored with six of the eight runs coming from two, three-run homers.
- Down 8-0, Methodist had some runs to make up. In their first at bat, Rob Wilkerson put the team's first one on the board with a solo homerun over the right field wall. Â
- Following a throwing error by the second baseman, Spencer Nelson and Wesley Hall stood on second and third base. Gavin Wheeler stepped up to the plate and hit a single just over the short stop in center field, bringing in both Hall and Nelson, to make it 8-3 before the last out of the inning.
- Both teams scored again in the third inning as N.C. Wesleyan tacked on one and Methodist added three. Nelson hit the fourth homerun of the game to bring in two runs which was followed by Wheeler with another double, but this time to right field.
- With the score now 9-6, the Monarchs had cinched the Battling Bishops lead to just three.
- Methodist gained some momentum following the team's small strides at a comeback, but N.C. Wesleyan chipped away at hits to extend it back up to five.
- The Monarchs could only register one more run for the game off the team's three hits through the last five innings.
STAT FACTSÂ
- Four Monarchs led the team with two hits; Jacob Austin, Nelson, Hall and Wheeler, as Wheeler batted in the most RBIs for the game.
