Monarchs Wrap Up MU Fall Invite

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The annual Methodist University Men's Tennis Fall Invitational concluded its three days of action with Sunday's matches at the Gene Clayton Tennis Center.

The Monarchs welcomed Averett University, Guilford College, North Carolina Wesleyan University, and University of Mount Olive to the 2022 event.

Seven flights of singles action covered the courts Saturday and Sunday, following a Friday afternoon of all-doubles action.

The duo of Wills Belser and Matthew Hurley (Flight-1 DB) dropped their opening round 8-3 to John Falke and Albert Sitwell of N.C. Wesleyan. Now in the consolation side of the bracket, Belser and Hurley won their next match 8-4 before falling in the fifth place contest 8-2 to Diego Segovia and Andy Fanzaga, another N.C. Wesleyan team.
The twosomes of Andrew Wood and Ollie Custer (Flight-2), Cameron Roth and Evan Kane (Flight-3 RB), & Brady Mendler and Royce South (Flight-4 RB) battled hard in all three of their doubles matches but could not come up with a victory on Friday.
In Flight-4 round robin doubles, Williams Trocchi and Bridger Warlick went 2-1 after winning their first round matchup 8-4 and their third round match 8-7.

During single flight 1 bracket, both Belser and Hurley competed. Belser played well enough to make it to the championship round before losing to Falke 6-2, 6-1. Hurley did not have same success as his teammate dropping all his matches.

Custer (Flight-3), Roth (Flight-4), Kane (Flight-5), Warlick (Flight-6), and South (Flight-7) did not have a great time in singles by not picking up a win in any round of their respective brackets.
Flight 4 witnessed Wood take fifth place by defeating Rishi Halukurike of Guilford 6-2, 6-1. Also winning fifth was Trocchi by taking down Guilford's Dominik Pocrnja in a thrilling three set match.
Mendler played in a round robin style flight 7 where he was able to take two out of three matches.

The Monarchs follow their own three-day event with a similar weekend on September 16-18 at the Virginia Wesleyan (University) Fall Invitational in Norfolk, Virginia.
