Monarchs Finish Shy of Victory Versus Pacers

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Methodist men's basketball team narrowly suffered defeat during a hard-fought battle with William Peace on Wednesday. The Pacers claimed a 68-62 USA South Athletic Conference victory over the Monarchs in the March F. Riddle Center.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: William Peace def. Methodist, 68-62
Records: Methodist 0-16 (0-5 USA South), William Peace 10-6 (5-1)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs kept pace with the Pacers to start the first period, as an early three-point basket from Blake Lewis made the score 6-5 with William Peace out front. Methodist's Brone Brinson scored the team's next three field goals, while Montell Moore recorded two points at the free throw line.
  • Down by two, Moore knocked down a shot from behind the arc to give the Monarchs their first lead of the contest – an 18-17 advantage with 9:53 remaining in the half. A 12-4 scoring run gave William Peace a seven-point lead, but Methodist would close the gap to five, trailing 32-27 at the break.
  • Methodist set the tone for the second half with another three-point make by Lewis during the team's first possession. A layup by the Pacers was answered with a layup from Moore, and a free throw made by T.J. East pulled the Monarchs to within one. Methodist continued to scrap with William Peace, regaining the lead with a two-point bucket made by Jeremy Mull. That lead would quickly evaporate as the Pacers sank four three-pointers on their next six scoring possessions, pushing the Monarchs' deficit to seven.
  • Three baskets made by Methodist, including a Brinson three-pointer, pulled the home team back to within one. A layup by Moore gave the Monarchs another one-point advantage with 2:26 to go, but the Pacers scored the ensuing ten points to put the game out of reach.
