Monarchs Unable to Match the Hot Shooting of the Pride

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Methodist men's basketball team made the trek out to Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon for a USA South Athletic Conference matchup. The hot shooting by the Pride elevated them to a 93-81 victory over the Monarchs inside Hanes Gymnasium.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Greensboro def. Methodist, 93-81
Records: Methodist 0-19 (0-8 USA South), Greensboro 10-9 (5-3)
Location: Hanes Gymnasium; Greensboro, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Greensboro jumped out the gates by registering the first four points, but Methodist was able to tie the game with baskets by Myles Eakins and Jared Merchant. The next three and half minutes witnessed the Pride go on a 12-0 run to take a 16-4 advantage.
  • The young Monarchs of Eakins, Merchant and Derrion Hicklen combined for seven straight points to bring Greensboro's lead back down to single digits, 21-12, but the Pride was able to get those points back in a blink of an eye. A three by Isaiah Pruett of Greensboro gave his team their largest lead of the first half, 46-27, with 34 seconds left on the clock. Methodist was able to trim that down to 47-34 by outscoring the Pride 7-1 in those remaining seconds, including a buzzer beating three by Jeremy Mull.
  • A couple of three-pointers by Mull and Montell Moore made it a seven-point, 47-40, game just one minute into the second half. Greensboro was able to regroup and tallied the next six points but another three by Moore and a pair of free throws by Clayton Coe had the scoreboard read 53-45, in favor of the Pride.
  • Following a Greensboro basket by Matthew Brown, the Pride capitalized on a couple of Monarch turnovers to make it a double-digit contest again, 59-45. Coe and T.J. East each knocked down a shot from behind the arc to help keep Methodist in striking distance until Erik Alvey & Rujon Walters scored the next 10 Greensboro points to put their team up 71-51.
  • The Pride maintained a 20+ point advantage until a 9-0 run by the Monarchs, with Brone Brinson recorded five of the points, got it down to 84-69. Even though Methodist registered four-point spurts on three separate occasions, the combination of time and not getting the necessary stops were not on the Monarchs side to potentially comeback.
MORE TO IT
  • The way Greensboro shot, especially in the second half, it would be hard for any team to find a way to win. As a team, the Pride shot 64.9% from the field which includes making 19 of their 24 (79.2%) shots after halftime.
  • Four different Methodist players reached double digits, with Moore leading the way following a game-high 25 points. Greensboro had three shooters make double digits as Brown led his team with 20 points and seven rebounds.
