FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist University football was back in action following its bye week and hosted Brevard College on Saturday, October 14, in a USA South Athletic Conference clash. For the second game in a row, the Monarchs surrendered 50+ points in their 52-20 loss to the Tornadoes.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Brevard def. Methodist, 52-20
Records: Methodist 1-5 (1-2 USA South), Brevard 4-3 (4-0)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Each team started out by going three and out before Brevard scored the first points of the game. On a Methodist punt, the snap went over the head of Kenneth Schoene and into the end zone. Schoene was able to recover the ball and managed to get a punt off but the short kick was caught up Montrel Stinson of the Tornadoes and retuned 25 yards for the score.
- Brevard looked primed to score again on its very next possession as well. While starting near mid-field, four consecutive plays, three rushes and one catch, involving Chance Lee-Parker accounted for 24 yards and got the Tornadoes into the red zone. Later in the drive, the Monarch defense stepped up and stonewalled Lee-Parker on a fourth and one to force a turnover on downs.
- The next score would not happen until about halfway through the second quarter. Methodist had the ball in its own territory and quarterback Brandon Bullins just completed a pass to running back Keyshaun Pete. Pete managed to get seven yards before Quintrel Bowman of Brevard came in for the tackle and force a fumble.
- Bowman's teammate, Kameron Moore, recovered the ball for the Tornadoes at their own 49-yard line. Back-to-back passes, 33 & 15 yards, from quarterback Ethan Beamish to wideout Zackary Orr got Brevard to the three-yard line of the Monarchs. The next play was a handoff to Lee-Parker for the touchdown.
- On the ensuing Methodist drive, Bullins made completions of 10, 20, & 25 yards to A'Jani Mainer, Mikhail Baldwin, and Andre Wilson, respectively, to get the Monarchs into the red zone for the first time, at the Tornadoes 10-yard line. Eventually, Pete capped off the seven-play drive, covering 65 yards, with a three-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit in half, 14-7.
- With 1:10 left before halftime, Brevard got the ball back and three plays in a Beamish connection to Orr for 43 yards had the Tornadoes at Methodist 13-yard line. A few plays later, Lee-Parker registered his second rushing touchdown, this one from two-yards out, and gave Brevard a 21-7 advantage heading into the break.
- Methodist began the second half with the ball but did not have it long as Bullins was intercepted two plays in by the Tornadoes Bowman. On the next play, Beamish completed a 30-yard pass to Jordan Rowell for a Brevard touchdown, to make it 28-7.
- It was not long before the Monarchs responded back with their second touchdown of the contest. Two consecutive runs of 11 yards by Pete, along with a Tornadoes 15-yard penalty, got Methodist to the 30-yard line of Brevard. Then twice Bullins hooked up with Wade Thomas III for 11 & 19 yards, with the second reception going for a touchdown.
- Following that Monarch touchdown, the next three drives for them would come to a sudden halt as Bullins would throw a pick each time. On two of those change of possessions by the Tornadoes, they ended up scoring touchdowns with completed passes from Beamish to DJ Taylor, 21 yards, and Adam Douglas, five yards.
- On the kickoff after the Douglas score, Brevard kicked the ball out bounds and the automatic penalty allowed Methodist to spot the ball on its own 35-yard line to begin the drive. The drive though only lasted one play as the Tornadoes forced another turnover and recovered the ball at the Monarchs 39-yard line.
- Eight plays later, Brevard added three points to its total with a 26-yard field goal by Hugo Taylor.
- The Tornadoes scored their final touchdown of the game with 5:35 left on the clock. Once again Beamish and Douglas teamed up for the six-yard score.
- In despite need of a spark, Bryson Ausby provided excellent starting field position for Methodist as he returned a kickoff 69 yards to the Tornadoes 25-yard line. Two plays later Bullins found an open Thomas again on a 21-yard touchdown pass.
MORE TO IT
- With the number of turnovers that the Monarchs had, this allowed Brevard to control time of possession. The Tornadoes had the ball for 36 minutes, 31 seconds while Methodist had it for 23:29.
- Offensively, the Monarch ground game was led by Pete with 74 rushing yards, on 17 carries, and a touchdown. Thomas had the most catches (8) and receiving yards (73) out of all Methodist receivers, including a team-high, and career-high, two touchdowns.
- With his 183 passing yards, Bullins becomes the first-ever USA South player to throw for over 10,000 passing yards in a career.
- Defensively, Damian Harris led all Monarch tacklers with six, which was a game-high, including one tackle for loss. Not far behind with five tackles each was Christian Richardson and Syone Beckford.
