GREENSBORO, N.C. Senior quarterback
Brandon Bullins only threw one touchdown pass in the game but that was all he need to set a new program & USA South record for the most touchdown passes in a career, with 82, in the Methodist University football team's 27-21 loss to host Greensboro College on Saturday afternoon, in conference play.
Bullins re-wrote the record book during his time as a Monarch. He leaves the program as the school's all-time leader in passing yards per game (253), pass completions (967), passing yards (11,141), and total offense (11,208).
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Greensboro def. Methodist, 27-21
Records: Methodist 2-8 (2-5), Greensboro 2-8 (2-5)
Location: Pride Field; Greensboro, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It only took the Pride one play on their first offensive drive to put points on the scoreboard. Quarterback Alec Williams-Carr found wideout Tareek Smith deep pass down the middle for a 44-yard touchdown.
- Following another Monarch possession that resulted in no points, senior Andrew Bradshaw was able to get to Williams-Carr of Greensboro on a strip sack. Javon McQune jumped on the loose ball for Methodist, at the Pride's 22-yard line.
- Just like Greensboro did earlier in the game, the Monarchs required just one play to tie the game up at 7-7. Bullins threw a 22-yard strike to fellow senior Thomas Wade III for the touchdown.
- On the Pride's ensuing drive, Williams-Carr connected with Christian Burgess on 45-yard screen play that resulted in a touchdown but a costly holding penalty nullified the score and back up the chains. Later in that same drive, Greensboro went for it on a fourth and one, on the Methodist 16-yard line, but were denied the first down by the Monarch defense.
- Neither side would find the end zone again until there as was 22 seconds left in the second quarter, where it was the Pride that scored. Williams-Carr hooked up with Tegan Griggs on a seven-yard touchdown pass. The conversion attempt afterwards was no good, so the teams went to their respective locker rooms with the score reading 13-7.
- The first touchdown of the third quarter was provided by the Greensboro defense. Methodist running back Sajari Love fumbled the ball, forced by Qualene Noell, and then Tyler Alston of the Pride scooped up the ball and returned it 23 yards to make it 20-7.
- Greensboro made it 27-7 on its next offensive drive. The duo of Williams-Carr and Griggs linked up again, in the end zone, on a nine-yard pass.
- Just before the end of the third quarter, Bradshaw came up with another big play for Monarchs defense as he recorded his second strip sack of the game. This time Tamir Simons picked up the ball and returned it 65 yards for a Methodist scoop & score.
- The Monarchs final touchdown of game came with 8:37 left in the fourth quarter. Senior Keyshaun Pete was able to break free on a 19-yard touchdown run to cut it to a one score ballgame, 27-21.
- With under 1:01 left on the clock, the Pride had the ball on the Methodist 39-yard line with a third and one to go. An offsides penalty on the Monarchs gave Greensboro a fresh set of downs and one final kneel down ended the game.
MORE TO IT
- In his last game wearing the Green & Gold as well, Pete carried the ball 18 times for 100 yards (both game-highs) and a touchdown. He also led Methodist in receiving with seven catches for 53 yards. Pete finishes his career with 2,715 rushing yards (third-best mark in program history) and 32 rushing touchdowns (fourth-best). In terms of all-purpose yards, he now ranks third all-time with 4,221.
- With his three kickoff returns for 69 yards, Bryson Ausby has returned the ball 36 times for 860 yards this season, which is two new single-season records. His 36 returns breaks a single-season mark (35) that has stood since the team's inaugural season. His 860 yards kickoff return yards surpasses a 1999 record (806).
- On defense, the Monarchs were led by freshman Dominic Hyman, who had eight tackles and a pass break-up. Not far behind was classmate Craig Morton III with seven tackles and a pass break-up. Bradshaw had three tackles, two for a loss, two sacks, and two force fumbles.
