Monarchs Are Victorious in Home Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University women's basketball hosted Pfeiffer University in a USA South Athletic Conference game on Tuesday night, November 21. It was the home opener for the Monarchs, the only home contest before the new calendar year, and they were able to produce a 65-56 victory over the Falcons.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Pfeiffer, 65-56
Records: Methodist 3-2 (2-1 USA South), Pfeiffer 2-2 (1-1)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alexis Bynum gave her team an early edge after registering the first five points for Pfeiffer. Methodist then took an 8-5 lead, first of the game, following a Jessica Drake three ball. A few minutes later, two baskets in a row by Bynum tied up the ballgame at 10-10. The Monarchs finished up the first quarter on a 6-1 run to give them a five-point cushion heading into the second frame.
  • The second quarter started with Drake recording five of the opening eight Methodist points and push its lead to 11-points, 24-13. Kenadie Hudler of the Falcons stopped the Monarch run by knocking down a three-pointer but Methodist soon regained those points with buckets from Aniyah Tate & Aneesa Irizarry. Miya Horton made the last basket of the first half to bring Pfeiffer's deficit down to nine-points, 30-21.
  • The Falcons got some production from Hannah Isley to begin the third quarter as she made back-to-back layups to bring her team within five. Rebecca McGaughnea then scored the first second-half points for the Monarchs, which also sparked a 7-0 run. Pfeiffer continued to feed the hot hand of Isley and that led to her tallying another seven points. By the time the third period came to an end Methodist saw it advantage down to a two-possession game, 43-37.
  • The Monarchs utilized a seven-point swing in the early stages of the fourth quarter to get them back up to a double-digit lead. The Falcons Lola Cabiness-Ali, two layups, and Bynum, a layup plus and-one, did everything in their power to make it a tighter contest but Drake kept answering back for Methodist with more shots from downtown.
MORE TO IT
  • For the second consecutive game, Drake found her stroke from behind the arc by making five threes for the second consecutive game. She finished with a game-high 22 points.
  • Tate, 15 points, and Irizarry, 14 pts., were also in double figures.
