MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.  Methodist University women's basketball played its second game of the 2023 Cruzin Classic on Wednesday afternoon, against Baldwin Wallace University, a team from the state of Ohio. Inside the Fernandez Family Center, on the campus of St. Thomas University (Fla.), the Yellow Jackets showed why they were a preseason ranked team heading into the 2023-24 season as they defeated the Monarchs 65-41.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Baldwin Wallace def. Methodist, 65-41
Records: Methodist 6-4, Baldwin Wallace 8-2
Location: Fernandez Family Center; Miami Gardens, Florida

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With baskets by Aniyah Tate and Rebecca McGaughnea, Methodist had itself a 4-0 lead within the first three minutes of the contest, which was the team's only lead for the remainder of the game. Back-to-back three-pointers ignited a 10-0 run for Baldwin Wallace to make it a six-point difference with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. Layups by the Monarchs' Jillian Peterson & Arriana White cut it to two points, 12-10, but another couple of threes by the Yellow Jackets made it an eight-point difference at the end of the first.
  • After Baldwin Wallace increased its advantage to double digits, 23-12, Jessica Drake knocked down her own triple for Methodist and then a pair of free throws by Tate got the Monarchs to within two possessions. With a little under five minutes left in the second quarter, Aneesa Irizarry and Peterson tallied a quick four points, two by each, following a made three by the Yellow Jackets. Those were the last points by Methodist in the first half as Baldwin Wallace scored 11 straight points to take a 37-21 lead into halftime.
  • Both sides matched point-for-point to begin the third frame but the Yellow Jackets eventually made it 44-25 with a three-pointer. The scoring slowed down for each team during the last eight minutes of the third with the squads adding four more points each to their respective totals, until Baldwin Wallace registered another three ball to push its lead to 20+ points, 51-29.
  • Tate recorded the first four points for the Monarchs at the start of the fourth quarter. After that the Yellow Jackets went on a 12-2 run to wrap up their scoring for the remainder of the ballgame. Methodist finished up the game strong by scoring the final six points, with Kiley Hicks tallying four of them.
MORE TO IT
  • Leading the Monarchs in scoring was Tate with 12 points. Hicks and Peterson were right behind her with eight points each.
  • A little over 68% of Methodist scoring came from inside the paint.
  • For the third contest in a row, including four out of their last five, the Monarchs have recorded 10 or more steals. During this three-game span, Melissa D'Oleo and Tate have each registered at least two steals.
