Monarchs Conclude Non-Conference Play With Loss to Ferrum

FERRUM, Va.  Falling short of victory against the Ferrum Panthers, the Methodist men's basketball team took the court for the final time of the 2023 calendar year on Saturday. The Monarchs were challenged offensively, shooting 30.2% as they dropped the contest by a score of 89-48.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • As the Monarchs kept pace with Ferrum early, Zac Sledge sank a jumper that gave Methodist a 9-7 lead just over three minutes into the game. His next jumper tied the game at 11-11, but an 8-0 run in favor of the Panthers ensued.
  • Ferrum's lead slowly built, reaching 15 points with under six minutes remaining in the half as Zavier Measmer's jumper capped off a six-point run for the Panthers. D.J. Squire found Brone Brinson for a three-pointer with 3:37 left in the period to reduce Methodist's deficit to 12, but the Monarchs were held scoreless for the remainder of the half, allowing Ferrum to score the final eight points before halftime.
  • After Derrion Hicklen's jumper to start the second half brought the Monarchs to within 18 points (42-24), Ferrum produced a 9-0 run, scoring on its next four offensive possessions. Brinson scored Methodist's next five points, making the score 53-29 with still more than 15 minutes left to play.
  • As Hicklen (6), Malek Ngong (6) and Brian Bullock (3) combined for Methodist's next 15 points, the Panthers scored 25, including 12 points for Ferrum's Calvin Washington. Over the final four minutes, the Monarchs were outscored 11-4 as Methodist's Elijah Blanding recorded two layups in the paint.

  • Playing a team-high 33 minutes, Derrion Hicklen led the Monarchs with 12 points and seven rebounds.
  • In his first start this season, Brone Brinson scored a season-high 10 points.
