Methodist Finished Up Home Slate With Win Over N.C. Wesleyan

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist women's basketball played in its final home game for the 2022-23 season, on Tuesday night, against North Carolina Wesleyan University. This USA South Athletic Conference game resulted in the Monarchs fending off a late Battling Bishops comeback for a 58-53 victory in the confined of the March F. Riddle Center.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. N.C. Wesleyan, 58-53
Records: Methodist 14-9 (9-7 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 16-7 (12-4)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With the first two baskets of the ball game, Aniyah Tate had Methodist up early before N.C. Wesleyan tallied four consecutive points to tie it up. Over the next three minutes, the Monarchs outscored the Battling Bishops 10 to 4 to give themselves a 14-8 advantage. A 4-2 scoring run by Methodist to cap off the first quarter would put them up by eight.
  • A small five-point burst by the Monarchs gave them their first double digit lead, 25-14, of the contest. Later N.C. Wesleyan managed to register five straight points as well to get back within six of the lead. In the closing seconds, a jumper by Jessica Drake sent Methodist to halftime with an eight-point advantage, 29-21.
  • The third period saw the Monarchs get back up to a 14-point, 37-23, lead following six points scored between Drake and Tate. The Battling Bishops made it 37-28 thanks to another small run but a bucket by Ni'Jaa Wells would give Methodist a four-possession lead heading into the fourth stanza.
  • To begin the fourth, the teams went point-for-point before Aneesa Irizarry knocked down a couple of free throws to spark a 6-0 run by the Monarchs. Even with Methodist now up by 15 points, 50-35, N.C. Wesleyan would still chip away at the deficit before Areina Harris nailed a deep three to make it a six-point game. The Battling Bishops was able to get within three points, 56-53, after a free throw and a wrong basket made on the Monarchs. Luckily Drake connected on a pair of free throws to seal the game away.
MORE TO IT
  • Majority of Methodist team points came from the paint, as the Monarchs recorded 40 of their 58 points in that area. N.C. Wesleyan managed just 22 points down low.
  • Both sides finished with 45 rebounds each but the Battling Bishops were able to come away with six more offensive boards, 19 to 13, over Methodist.
  • Co-leading the game with 12 points each were Corynthian Williams of N.C. Wesleyan and Drake from the Monarchs. Kiley Hicks recorded her six double-double this season after scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
