Methodist Sweeps Sweet Briar for First Two Wins of the Season

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist softball was back it on Sunday afternoon and got a visit from Sweet Briar College for a non-conference doubleheader. Both games only took five innings each, as the Monarchs collected their first two wins over the Vixens by score of 11-2 & 9-1 on Price Field.

With these two victories, head coach Alexis Wickham Allaman picked up her first two coaching wins of her career.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. Sweet Briar, 11-2 (5 Inns.); Methodist def. Sweet Briar, 9-1 (5 Inns)
Records: Methodist 2-2; Sweet Briar 0-4
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sweet Briar scored the first run of Game 1, in the first inning, when Melanie Rees hit a ball into the outfield to teammate Lauren Jamerson home. In the second, Methodist used a big six-run inning to take the lead.
  • First Emily Angel drove in a run with her RBI triple before Angel crossed the plate herself on a Haley Downes sacrifice fly. The Monarchs got another run off a Vixens error followed by Haley Fethke crushing a three-run homerun over the left field fence.
  • Methodist got a run in the third and two in the fourth to make it 9-1. Sydney Sizemore ended the first game with her own two-run homerun in the bottom half of the fifth. Rees would get a second run for Sweet Briar with another RBI single in the top half of the inning.
  • In Game 2, the Monarchs were the ones that got on scoreboard first as Methodist took advantage of a Vixen error to get one run before Fethke crushed a homerun for the team's second score. Bailey Snow doubled the Monarchs score with a two RBI single.
  • The third inning saw Methodist tally four more runs to make it 8-0. Fethke started it off with her second long ball – a solo homer -- of the contest before Angel smacked an RBI double off the outfield fence. Then Snow drove in another two runs with her hit back up the middle.
  • Kaydin Williams brought in the lone Sweet Briar run in fourth. Heather Tsapp recorded the final Monarch run with a sacrifice fly.
NUMBERS
  • Methodist had a fine showing its pitching staff. Rebekah Haigler, Sarah Haywood, Kiersten Margoupis, and Emma Neeley all combined to only give up three runs the entire day.
  • Leading the Monarchs offensively were Angel, Fethke, and Snow. Both Angel and Fethke were 4 for 6 with three runs but with four and five RBIs respectively. Snow went 4 for 7 and had four RBIs.
