Tate's 28 Not Enough to Advance Methodist to Semifinals

BREVARD, N.C. The Methodist women's basketball team competed in the quarterfinal round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday, traveling to Brevard College. The Monarchs fell by eight points to the Tornados.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Brevard def. Methodist, 84-76
Records: Methodist 14-11, Brevard 16-9
Location: Boshamer Gymnasium; Brevard, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first four minutes were very back-and-forth as the score tied at 2-2, 4-4 and 6-6. An 11-0 run by Brevard gave the Tornados a 17-6 advantage. Melissa D'Oleo scored two baskets to Brevard's one to end the first period.
  • Methodist's nine-point deficit grew to 15 as Brevard opened the second quarter with a streaky six points. The Monarchs responded in a big way, scoring seven-straight baskets over a four-minute span to even the score at 25-25. Aniyah Tate was responsible for four of those buckets, warranting eight points, while Jessica Drake knocked down the only three-pointer of the stretch. The teams battled to a 31-31 halftime score.
  • Brevard opened the third quarter with another 6-0 run, but a Jillian Peterson three and two more Tate baskets gave the Monarchs their first lead since early in the first quarter. With 4:49 left in the quarter, Drake sank another three to make the score 43-41 in favor of Methodist. The Tornados responded with a three of their own and slightly outpaced the Monarchs to take a three-point edge into the fourth quarter.
  • Methodist's first 10 points of the fourth quarter were all tallied by Tate, inching the Monarchs to within one point of the Tornados. However, Brevard would not give, draining four fourth-quarter three-pointers on their way to victory.
MORE TO IT

  • The Tornados scored 26 points off Methodist's turnovers compared to the Monarchs' 6 points off Brevard's turnovers.
  • Brevard was 2-for-15 from behind the arc in the first half, but 6-for-10 in the second half.
