Kollar Walks it Off for Methodist in Game One; Monarchs Split with Lynchburg

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist softball welcomed the University of Lynchburg to Price Field on Sunday afternoon for a couple of non-conference games. The Monarchs took the first game in walk-off fashion, 5-4, before the Hornets won the second game 3-0.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. Lynchburg, 5-4; Lynchburg def. Methodist, 3-0
Records: Methodist 5-3; Lynchburg 5-1
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The second inning saw both teams tally two runs each, in Game 1. First, Lynchburg got a double from Sarah Watts to drive in one run and with the very next batter, Addison Walter, a hit to the outfield plated another run.
  • In the bottom half of the inning, Emily Angel was able to bring a run home for Methodist on her RBI groundout. Haley Downes, the next batter, would then lay down a push bunt to score her teammate on third base.
  • The Hornets went up 4-2 in the sixth inning following a fielding error in the outfield that allowed an inside the park 2-run homerun.
  • Though the Monarchs were down heading into the seventh, they put on their rally visors and were able to walk it off. First, Haley Fethke beat out an infield single to drive in one run and some heads-up base path running by Sydney Sizemore allowed her slide in as well to tie the game, 4-4. Two batters later, Maria Kollar launched a deep double into left field for the game-winning RBI.
  • Game 2 saw the Methodist offense being held at bay, as Lynchburg's starting pitcher Kailey Dorcsis only gave up three hits.
  • While Dorcsis flashed her pitching skills, the Hornets were to score one run in fourth and two in sixth.
NUMBERS
  • Along with only giving up three hits in the second game, Dorcsis struck out 10 Monarch batters while allowing one free pass in a complete-game shutout.
  • The first game saw Alyssa Barwick of Methodist go the distance while giving up four runs (two earned) and four hits.
