Monarchs Drop Both Matches to Bulldogs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist men's tennis team played host to a pair of matches with The Citadel, a Division I institution. The Monarchs fought hard but in the end Bulldogs took both games, at the Gene Clayton Tennis Center, by scores of 9-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Game 1, the Citadel had a 3-0 lead following the end of doubles play with the Bulldogs winning two of the three games 8-1. Methodist's Wills Belser & Cameron Roth had the closest contest against Hayden Shoemake & Tucker Hendrix, of the Citadel, in their 8-3 loss.
  • Four of the six single matches resulted in 6-0, 6-0 set sweeps.
  • In No. 1 singles, Matthew Hurley of the Monarchs fell to Showmake 6-2, 6-2. On Court 2, Zvonko Bencedic of the Bulldogs defeated Belser 6-3, 6-2 to complete the sweep.
  • Game 2, once again the Citadel led 3-0 by the time doubles action came to an end. The duo of Andrew Wood & Hurley for Methodist came close in beating Shoemake & Hendrix before falling 8-5.
  • Belser would fall to Lucas Robins of the Bulldogs 7-5, 6-3, in singles No. 2. This time on Court 1, Hurley suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Bencedic.
  • Both Roth and Will Trocchi were the only other Monarchs to claim a game in their respective matches.
