Fast Start by Methodist Not Enough to Beat Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va.  Methodist women's lacrosse played its first USA South Athletic Conference game on Saturday as the team traveled Southern Virginia University. A strong start by the Monarchs but in the end the Knights came away with the 20-11 victory at Knight Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Scoring the first four goals of the contest was Methodist – two by Mikayla Ramos and one each from Payton Jones & Kayla Nee – to jump out to a 4-0 advantage. Tyler John and Kate Richards got two scores back for Southern Virginia but goals from Ramos, her third, and Layla Wiesenfeld put the Monarchs back up by four, 6-2. Kennedy Martin got into the scoring action with Methodist seventh goal of the first quarter while the Knights were able to get another score from both John and Richards to make it 7-4 at the end of the period.
  • The second began with Southern Virginia registering three straight goals to tie the game, 7-7, with Alissa Johnson tallying all three scores. Ramos found the back of the cage for the fourth time to give the Monarchs the lead once more but then the Knights scored four more goals to close out the half and took an 11-8 advantage.
  • After trading off goals early on in the third stanza, Southern Virginia got the ball past the Methodist goalie four more times to go up 16-9. Jones would score a last second goal for the Monarchs right before the third concluded to bring the deficit down to six.
  • The fourth quarter saw the Knights outscore Methodist 4-1 in the final 15 minutes, with Martin getting the last goal for the Monarchs.
FAST FACTS 
  • Southern Virginia had three players that tallied four or more goals in the contest. Ramos was the only Methodist scorer to have exactly four goals, which led the team.
  • The Monarchs committed 34 turnovers throughout the game with the Knights causing 22 of those turns.
  • Methodist held the edge in draw control, 19 to 14, over Southern Virginia. Tia Marlinghaus of the Monarchs had a game-high 10 wins.
