FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Methodist University women's tennis team, the number two seed, hosted seventh seeded Meredith College in the first round of the 2023 USA South Women's Tennis Championships on Tuesday afternoon. The Monarchs won the match 5-0 over the Avenging Angels, per tournament rules of playing to decision.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Giving Methodist its first victory of the day was the team of Megan Kidd & Valeria Matute, 8-0, against Anna Bittler & Lexie House of Meredith in number three doubles.
- The other two double flights saw the Monarchs win 8-2 each, which gave Methodist a 3-0 match lead. On court one, Toni Laney & Veva Willocks defeated the Aveging Angels own Ellie Osborne & Sophie Phillips. The Meredith duo of Claire Southern & Hannah Jo Jablonski lost to Kamdyn Balko & Cailin Cifra.
- Both Matute and Willocks swept their singles opponent 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the match (5-0) for the Monarchs. The other four singles flights were left unfinished.
UP NEXT
Methodist plays Southern Virginia University, the number three seed, on Thursday in the semifinals. The match is scheduled for 2 PM and will be played at North Carolina Wesleyan University, the site of both the tournament's semifinals and final.
