Monarchs Fall in Regular Season Finale to Battling Bishops

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  Methodist University baseball finished up the regular season on Monday night at North Carolina Wesleyan University, in a USA South Athletic Conference game. The Monarch offense was able to come alive and give the team a lead at one point, but the Battling Bishops would still end up as the victors by a 9-5 decision at Bauer Field.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist, 9-5
Records: Methodist 27-11 (13-8 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 30-8 (18-3)
Location: Bauer Field, Rocky Mount, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It did not take long for N.C. Wesleyan to take the early lead as Tyson Bass smashed a two-run homerun over the left fence, in the first inning. A few batters later, Jaiden Barker made it 3-0 off his RBI double.
  • Another RBI, in the second, by Bass pushed the Battling Bishop advantage up to 4-0.
  • In the third, Rob Wilkerson cut the deficit in half, 4-2, for Methodist with his two-RBI base hit. The very next batter, Wesley Hall, then cranked a three-run long ball out past left field to give the Monarchs a 5-4 lead.
  • Methodist continued to hold its lead for two more innings before N.C. Wesleyan re-took the advantage, 6-5, in the fifth. A Jackson Hobbs RBI groundout tied the contest and then a second consecutive RBI groundout, this time by Davie Morgan, put the Battling Bishops in front.
  • N.C. Wesleyan extended its run total to nine by adding three more runs in the sixth. A couple of Monarch miscues led to a pair of runs coming across followed by a Zach Lyon sacrifice fly.
STAT FACTS
  • As was the case for the entire three-game series, the Battling Bishops out hit Methodist 12 to seven in game three (27 to 17 for the series).
  • All but one of N.C. Wesleyan hitters recorded a hit. Pacing the Battling Bishops offense was Bass, who went 3-for-4 and had three RBIs.
  • Jacob Austin and Wilkerson led the Monarchs with two hits each, while Hall had a team-high three RBIs.
