FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. After an hour lightning delay, Methodist University football finally took the field for its home opener against a common opponent in Guilford College, on Saturday night. In the first-ever night football contest at Monarch Stadium, the Quakers came in and stunned the Monarchs defeating them 39-21.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Guilford def. Methodist, 39-21
Records: Methodist 0-2, Guilford 2-0
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Guilford was able to come away with points on two of its first three possessions while Methodist struggled to move the ball. On the first drive of the game, the Quakers went 51 yards before calling upon Burke Nettles to convert a 39-yard field goal. Two possessions later Nettles made a 41-yarder to give the Quakers a 6-0 lead.
- On the ensuing Methodist drive following the second made field goal, quarterback Brandon Bullins was picked off by Guilford's Tristian Bailey in Monarchs territory. It took only three plays after the interception for Joseph Brown Jr. to run the ball in for a touchdown from 25-yards out.
- That was not the last time Brown's number was called as he had another rushing touchdown, also for 25-yards, to make it 19-0. The Quakers would be unsuccessful on the point after touchdown due to a bad snap which forced the holder to just jump on top of the ball.
- It looked like Methodist was about to get the offense going before a costly holding penalty change that and eventually led to a punt. On the next Guilford drive, Bailey Baker connected with JuJu Rice to cap off a four-play, 51-yard drive, to take a 26-0 advantage.
- In a blink of an eye the Monarchs fell into a 32-0 hole with Bullins being intercepted again, this time by Jaylen Moore, and the Quakers defender return it 38 yards for the touchdown. The PAT was then blocked by Tamir Simons to keep the scoreboard as it stands.
- Methodist were able to generate a little of life before halftime with Bullins hooking up with Harrison Muldrow on a 73-yard touchdown pass. With the horn sounding at the half, the Monarchs went into the locker down 32-6 due to the PAT being blocked by Guilford.
- Methodist started the second half in the right direction by scoring on its first possession of the third quarter. The team marched 67 yards down the field on nine plays with running back Keyshawn Pete scoring from the one-yard line, to make it 32-13.
- The Monarch offense did their job to begin the second half, so now it was the defense turn. It appeared they answered the call when the Quakers offense was facing a fourth and four inside their own 30-yard line. That changed quickly as Guilford's punter Nettles took the snap and then ran 23 yards for the first down to keep his team's offense on the field.
- Even after the fake punt Methodist's defense did manage to force a Quaker punt but it was not long before the Monarchs had to go back out as the ball was muffed and recovered by Guilford at the five-yard line. For the third time, the defense stood tall and prevented the Quakers from finding the end zone. A Nettles 27-yard field no goal attempt was no good either as he hit the right upright.
- Following the change of possession, Methodist had the ball for three plays before Guilford got the ball back on a fumble recovery. That led to a Baker 14-yard touchdown pass to Brodey King and give the Quakers a 39-13 lead by the end of quarter.
- The Monarchs scored the final touchdown of the game with 9:34 left in the fourth. A six play, 45-yard drive, was finished off with Bullins zipping a 24-yard pass to Mikhail Baldwin.
MORE TO IT
- Even though Guilford had the ball nine minutes longer than Methodist, 34:30 to 25:30, the Monarchs managed to finish with more total yards. Of the 424 total yards, 312 of it came from the Methodist passing game.
- For the fourth game in a row, dating back to the final two games of the 2022 season, Pete of the Monarchs accumulated 100 or more rushing yards.
- On the defensive side, Alex Boyd led the team with a career-high 12 tackles and was one of eight Methodist defenders that recorded a tackle for loss.
