Monarchs Fall 1-0 Against Unbeaten Christopher Newport

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Hosting the highly-ranked Capitals of Christopher Newport on Wednesday, the mighty women's soccer Monarchs played a tight match with their powerhouse opponent. The Capitals owned a Goliath-sized 52-game unbeaten streak entering the contest and emerged with a 1-0 victory to extend that streak to 53. Methodist held the visitors scoreless through the first 78 minutes before conceding the lone goal.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Christopher Newport def. Methodist, 1-0
Records: Methodist 4-3, Christopher Newport 8-0
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In goal for Methodist during the first half, Carolina Simpkins faced seven shots on goal, recording saves on six. The Captains took 20 shots in total throughout the first period, but the Monarchs' interior defense was tough to crack, forcing Christopher Newport to take numerous shots from beyond the box.
  • On one occasion during the first half, Simpkins made a diving save, then on the ensuing shot, another Methodist defender came sliding in to boot the ball away and prevent the score.
  • Kaylea Carter stepped in goal for the Monarchs for the second half. The Captains took six shots in the first 15 minutes of the period – two of which were on goal and both of which were saved by Carter. Methodist recorded its one shot on goal of the match during the second minute of the second half – a shot by Corrine Shovlain that was handled by the CNU goalkeeper.
  • In the 78th minute, the Captains moved the ball from midfield with urgency. Working from the left side of the goal, Corrine Kulik fed a pass inside to Ellie Cox who sent a shot quickly rolling past Carter for the winning score.
NUMBERS
  • Christopher Newport's 34 shots are the most taken by a Methodist opponent this season, with 13 shots on goal also being a season-high for MU opponents. Methodist's 3 shots and one shot on goal are both season lows.
  • Methodist's defensive effort in the loss was no fluke. The Monarch defense has conceded just six goals through seven matches this season.
  • This is Methodist's best result versus Christopher Newport since 2015. The 1-0 finish shows improvement since Methodist's 6-0 loss to Christopher Newport in 2022.
