Aniyah Tate Records a Career-High 30 Points as Methodist Beats Salem on the Road

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  For the second time in as many days Methodist University women's basketball recorded 70 points in a USA South Athletic Conference road contest, with the team visiting Salem College on Sunday, January 14. Pacing the Monarchs was senior Aniyah Tate with a career-high 30 points as they defeated the Spirits 70-55.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Salem, 70-50
Records: Methodist 10-5 (7-1 USA South), Salem 7-7 (3-4)
Location: Varsity Gym; Winston-Salem, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salem won the initial jump ball to gain the first possession of the game but it was Methodist to score the first points as Jessica Drake drained a triple. A couple of minute later, Tate registered her own three-point play with a layup and then convert a free throw after being fouled. From there the two sides went back and forth exchanging points until the Spirits got within two, 12-10, heading into the second quarter.
  • The trend of trading off points continued to start the second and then Tate went to work by tallying four straight points to give the Monarchs a six-point advantage, 21-15. A 7-1 run by Salem would tie the game at 22 all but Jillian Peterson put Methodist back in front once more following her made shot from behind the arc. To close out the first half, Methodist scored nine unanswered points to take a 34-23 lead.
  • It was all Monarchs for almost the first five minutes of the third frame with Methodist opening up on an 8-0 run. The Spirits were able to record their first points of the second half at the 5:18 mark. Before the quarter came to end Salem was able to string together five consecutive points to close the deficit to 13 points, 48-35.
  • After going a little bit cold to end the previous period, the Monarchs came out strong to begin the fourth by outscoring the Spirits 9-2. Methodist maintained close to a 20-point for the remainder of the contest.
MORE TO IT
  • Tate led all scorers after making a career-high 13 field goals. She is the first 30-point scorer for the Monarchs since Lisa Jackson at Emory & Henry University in November of 2005.
  • Also with a career day was Aneesa Irizarry with highs in rebounds (nine) & steals (seven), as well as registering five assists.
  • With the win, Methodist improves to 7-1 in USA South play. This is the Monarchs best start in conference action since the 2007-08 season, a year the team went 14-4.
