HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs kept pace with the Eagles in the first quarter, finishing the period down 15–14. Six points came off the hand of Kayleen Grullon, who was assist by Aneesa Irizarry on two of her three baskets.
  • The second quarter was not kind to Methodist, as Mary Washington scored the first seven points of the period. A free throw by Serenity Webb interrupted the run, but the Eagles went right back to work, scoring the next nine points. A jump shot by Kiley Hicks with under 10 seconds remaining in the half reduced Methodist's deficit to 14 points, making the score 33–19. Grullon and Melissa D'Oleo both picked up their third fouls before halftime.
  • Two fouls within the first two minutes of the third quarter gave Rebecca McGaughnea three total for the game. Irizarry was next to record two fouls within the span of less than a minute, picking up her third of the game with 7:30 left to play in the third quarter. An 8–0 run in favor of the Eagles made the score 45–24 halfway through the third quarter, and after a short-lived pushback by the Monarchs, Mary Washington increased its lead to 22 points with a two–point bucket in the waning seconds of the third period.
  • McGaughnea and D'Oleo both fouled out of the contest and Grullon added four points to her total in the fourth quarter as Mary Washington increased its lead to 30 points. The final five points of the game went to the Monarchs, shrinking the margin to 25.
