David McCallum's Career Shooting Night Not Enough to Take Down No. 25 Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.  The Methodist University men's basketball team went on the road to take on 25th-ranked Guilford College in a non-conference contest on Saturday, and from start to finish, it was an instant classic game as both squads battled to the final whistle. In the end, the Quakers won 70-63 and avoided upset by the Monarchs.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Guilford def. Methodist, 70–63
Records: Methodist 4-4, Guilford 6–2
Location: Ragan-Brown Field House; Greensboro, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first two minutes saw the teams go toe-to-toe as Methodist matched each of Guilford's opening shots, a jumper and a three-pointer, to tie the score at 5-5. Soon after, a made triple by Gabe Proctor of the Quakers sparked a 7-0 run, which put Guilford in front 12-5. For a span of three and a half minutes, it rained threes inside the Ragan-Brown Field House as all made field goals during that time were from behind the arc, with David McCallum Jr. (2) and Brian Bullock (1) making the shots for the Monarchs.
  • Guilford maintained its lead deep into the first half until the Methodist duo of Zac Sledge and Ke Edwards combined for eight straight points, five and three respectively, to tie the ballgame at 27-27. With 34 seconds left in the half, the Quakers outscored the Monarchs 5-2, which included a last-second floater, to claim a 32-29 lead into the break.
  • The second half started with Guilford making a couple of quick baskets, and then, the Quakers rattled off seven unanswered points to give themselves a double-digit advantage, 43-31. Methodist was able though to cut the deficit down to four points, 46-42, following an 11-3 run that was led by Edwards, who scored more than half of the points, six.
  • After another five points by Guilford, McCallum Jr., Ron Jones, and Edwards each drilled shots from downtown to bring the Monarchs within two, 53-51, with a little under nine minutes left in the game. Over the course of the next six minutes of game action, the Quakers pushed their lead back up to double-digits as they went on a 14-5 run.
  • With under a minute left, a three by McCallum Jr. capped off seven straight points by Methodist to make it a four-point contest, 67-63, but those would also be the final made points by the Monarchs.
MORE TO IT
  • Both side lit it up from three-point land as a total of 21 threes were made, 11 by Guilford and ten by Methodist. This was also the first time the Monarchs connected on ten or more three-pointers in a single-game since February of 2023, when they made 12.
  • The leading scorer for Methodist was McCallum Jr., who scored a career-high 17 points after making 6-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-7 behind the arc. Other Monarchs in double figures were Edwards (14) and Sledge (13).
  • The battle of the boards favored the Quakers tonight as they outrebounded Methodist 42-24, which includes a 15-3 difference in offensive rebounds. That also led Guilford to scoring 13 second chance points while the Monarchs only scored five.
