FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist University women's basketball was back in action on Tuesday with another home game against Randolph College before the calendar flips to the new year. The Monarchs held a 15-point advantage at halftime, but a strong third-quarter performance by the Wildcats turned the contest into a nail-biter that Methodist narrowly claimed by a score of 64–61 over Randolph.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Randolph, 64–61
Records: Methodist 6-5, Randolph 6-6
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wildcats registered a three-pointer on their first possession of the game to give themselves an early edge. Randolph continued to lead for another three minutes before Jillian Peterson knocked down a triple herself to put the Monarchs up by two, 7-5. Later in the opening quarter, Peterson scored four more points during a 6-0 run to give Methodist a seven-point advantage, 15-8.
- The second quarter began with the Monarchs scoring the first seven points to push their lead to 26-12. The Wildcats would then record five of the next seven total points, but that would be it, as they didn't register another point before the break. The last two baskets of the first half belonged to Methodist, which Arriana White scored.
- A pair of layups by the Monarchs early in the third period made it a 17-point ballgame, 36-19, and it appeared Methodist would run away with the game. But then Randolph went on a 16-2 run, and suddenly it was a three-point affair, 38-35, with a little over two minutes left in the third. The two teams would exchange points across the last couple of minutes before heading into the fourth quarter, with the Monarchs up 44-42.
- Another three by Peterson put Methodist up by two possessions until a 7-0 Wildcat run gave them their first lead since the opening quarter, 49-48. Thirty seconds later, the Monarchs reclaimed their lead after Kiley Hicks and Kayleen Grullon each scored two points. Down the stretch, Randolph managed to get within one of the lead, 53-52, but then Grullon converted a three-point play – a layup and a shot from the charity stripe – to put Methodist back up by four. The Monarchs then had some clutch baskets and free throws during the final two minutes to hang onto the victory.
MORE TO IT
- Methodist was led by Hicks and Peterson, who each registered 12 points.
- Grullon had a great overall game with nine points, seven rebounds (game-high), five steals (career-high), and two assists.
- Both teams struggled with ball security, as 51 total turnovers (26 by Randolph and 25 by Methodist) were committed. The Monarchs, though, did generate 24 points off the takeaways while the Wildcats scored 13.
- After a tough start to the 2024-25 campaign, Methodist ends 2024 on a high note with wins in six of the last seven games.
