Monarchs Conquer Royals at Home

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  For the second time in five days, Methodist University women's basketball and Regent University squared off again on the hardwood, this time inside the March F. Riddle Center. Similarly to their last meeting, the Monarchs took care of business and cruised to an 86-41 victory over the Royals on Wednesday.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Regent, 86–41
Records: Methodist 2-4, Regent 0-6
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started exactly like the first matchup, with Regent's Courtney Rowley scoring the opening points of the ballgame to give her team their only lead of the night. Shortly after, Melissa D'Oleo knocked down a pair of three-pointers during an 8-0 Methodist run. Baskets by Aneesa Irizarry and Kiley Hicks increased the Monarch's advantage to eight points, 12-4, and then sometime later, Alyssa Shazer registered five consecutive points (a three and a layup) to make it a double-digit difference, 18-7.
  • After scoring the last four points of the first quarter, Eva McRae began the second period by converting a three-point play, a basket and a free throw, to push the Methodist lead to 25-10. Following a made triple by Rowley of the Royals, a layup by D'Oleo sparked an 8-2 Monarch run to bring their advantage to 33-15. Before halftime, freshmen Destiny Richardson and Giavonna Dunlap scored six of the last eight points to give a Methodist a 24-point, 44-20, lead into the break.
  • It was a slow start by the Monarchs in the third quarter as it took two and a half minutes before their first basket, a put-back shot by Hicks. That bucket by Hicks did light a fire under Methodist as the team then went on an 11-2 run to give themselves their first 30-point edge, 55-24.
  • In the fourth quarter, Kayleen Grullon registered six of the first ten Methodist points before the senior duo of Shazer (three) and Hannah Evans (one) splashed their shots from behind the arc. Evans then finished off the night for the Monarchs as she recorded the final two buckets.
MORE TO IT
  • It was a career shooting night for Shazer as she scored 14 points on 5-of-10 from the field, including four made three-pointers.
  • Grullon and D'Oleo were other Methodist players who had impressive nights. Grullon finished with 13 points, seven rebounds, an assist, a block, and a steal, while D'Oleo had 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
  • The Monarchs' 86 team points are the most so far this season.
  • This was the second time this season that Methodist registered ten made threes in a game, the first since the season opener against Bridgewater.
UP NEXT
