JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. William Peace, 82-49
Records: Methodist 19-5 (16-1 USA South), William Peace 8-15 (6-11)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist found itself trailing, 4-3, three minutes into the opening quarter until a three by senior Jessica Drake put the Monarchs in front for the first time. William Peace scored the next five points to claim the lead again but then junior Hannah Evans drilled a triple to sparked a 12-0 run to swing the advantage back to the Monarchs.
- Methodist increased its lead to double digits, 26-12, after the Monarchs began the second period on an 8-0 run. Midway through the frame the Pacers would only need 39 seconds to score the next six points and cut the deficit down to eight points. After that Methodist held William Peace's offense to just one point, while five to its total score, and went into halftime up 31-19.
- The third quarter proved to be a dominate one for the Monarchs as they outscored the Pacers 33-11. It started with Methodist coming out of the locker room on a 14-2 run to take a 24-point lead. After a made three by William Peace, the Monarchs kept the scoring rolling with another ten straight points. Toward the end of the third the Pacers started to match shot-for-shot with Methodist but still found themselves down by 34 points, 64-30.
- Once again, the Monarchs began another quarter strong with freshman Kenya Atterbury capping off an 8-0 run two minutes into the fourth. With William Peace now down by 42 points, the team changed up its offensive strategy and began taking more shots from behind the arc. Suddenly four of their next seven three-pointers sank through the basket to bring the Pacers to within 30. Unfortunately for William Peace, the three ball soon stopped falling and Methodist was able to run out the clock.
