DANVILLE, Va. Methodist University made the trip up to Averett University on Saturday, February 24, to play a non-conference doubleheader. Game one required extra innings (8) but the Monarchs still came out on top, 2-1, before dropping a 6-5 decision to the Cougars in the second contest.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. Averett, 2-1 (8 Inns.); Averett def. Methodist, 6-5
Records: Methodist 2-4; Averett 1-3
Location: Cougar Field; Danville, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In Game One, Averett benefited from a Methodist error during the second inning to put the Cougars in front.
- That advantage did not last long as three consecutive Monarch hits, in the top half of the third, drove in the tying run. Picking up the RBI was sophomore Rachel Blanchard.
- The score remained 1-1 through seven innings, which forced the teams to go to extra innings. With its at-bats in the top half of the eighth, Methodist bunted the game-winning run over to second and then senior Sydney Sizemore connected on a base hit that went thru the left side of the infield for the RBI.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Averett was down to its last out. The batter made contact but the live ball than struck the Cougar runner heading toward third for the final out.
- The second game was a back-and-forth affair starting with Averett getting three runs in the first inning.
- RBIs by Devan Wenger (1) and Grace Hobbs (2) in the second and third innings knotted up the score, 3-3, for the Monarchs. Unfortunately for Methodist a miscue in the bottom half of the third gave the Cougars a 4-3 edge.
- After a scoreless fourth and fifth inning, the Monarchs gave Averett some trouble in the sixth. With runners on second and third, Wenger singled to right field to score one run but a Cougar fielding error allowed a second Methodist run to score, 5-4.
- Just like the Monarchs did in the top half, Averett tallied two runs themselves in the sixth.
NUMBERS
- Though senior pitcher Alyssa Barwick gave up 11 Averett hits in the opening game, she gutted it out and went the distance to collect her first win of the season. While allowing one run, unearned, she also struck out five Cougars.
- Going 4 for 7 on the day was Blanchard. She also registered an RBI and came around to score twice.
