MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. On Wednesday, February 28, Methodist University baseball traveled down to the Cal Ripken Experience to face Hanover College, in a neutral site contest for both squads. In a high scoring affair, the Monarchs found themselves on the wrong end of a 13-12 ballgame against the Panthers.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Hanover def. Methodist, 13-12
Records: Methodist 4-3, Hanover 3-2
Location: Cal Ripken Experience (Griffith Field); Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first inning saw both teams load the bases, but only Hanover was able to get one run across.
- Fortunately, Methodist registered its first four runs an inning later. An error in the outfield by the Panthers allowed two Monarch runners to score. Driving in the other two Methodist runs were Jackson Deal, off a double, and Jackson Kuhn, on a groundout.
- Hanover got one run back in the third before surrendering five to the Monarchs, 9-2, in the fourth. Bringing in three of the five Methodist runs was Tristen Melvin on a base clearing double.
- After being held to just two runs through the first three innings, the Panthers would outscore the Monarchs 10-1 between the fourth and sixth innings.
- Now 13-10 in favor of Hanover, two more runs by Methodist in the eighth made it a one-run game. Deal and Hunter Hollman were credited with the RBIs in the inning.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Monarch pitcher Anthony Sarbanes took the rubber and had a 1-2-3 inning, with two strikeouts, to keep it a one-run difference heading into the ninth.
- The Panthers though closed the book on Methodist with their own three up, three down inning to preserve the win.
STAT FACTS
- Four Monarchs finished the game with multi RBIs, which includes Melvin's three RBI (game-high) performance.
- Today was a bullpen day for Methodist as seven different Monarchs saw time on the mound.
