JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. N.C. Wesleyan, 73-68
Records: Methodist 17-5 (14-1 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 12-10 (12-3)
Location: Everett Gymnasium; Rocky Mount, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening quarter was a back-and-forth battle as there was four lead changes & five tie ups through the first seven minutes. During the last two minutes of the period, a pair of layups by Kiley Hicks gave Methodist the advantage once again, 14-10.
- Tate was held scoreless through the first frame but that changed quickly as she registered six consecutive points for the Monarchs to start the second. A five-point swing by N.C. Wesleyan made it 23-20 until Methodist recorded a fast four points, which includes a steal & a score by Tate to eclipse her milestone achievement, to take back the lead. An 8-0 Battling Bishop run saw them go up by five, 33-28, but that advantage disappeared right before halftime as the Monarchs went on a 7-2 run themselves, with Tate nailing a buzzer beating three-pointer to tie it up.
- Methodist tallied the first four points of the third stanza to break the tie before N.C. Wesleyan stuck back with a five-point spurt to go up 40-39. These small momentum shifts continued for both sides until the duo of Jillian Peterson and Aneesa Irizarry combined for seven Monarch points, five & four respectively, to push their lead to double digits.
- To begin the fourth quarter, Methodist maintained its double-digit advantage before another 8-0 Battling Bishop run trimmed the deficit down to just two points, 59-57. Soon after another six points by the Monarchs gave them an eight-point cushion with less than four minutes left in the contest. N.C. Wesleyan kept trying to go on one last run, and got as close as three points (71-68) to the lead, but Methodist was able to respond and extinguished any last efforts to come out on top.
MORE TO IT
- Tate now stands at 1,010 career points after tallying 17 tonight. She becomes the 7th Monarch in program history to make the 1,000-point club, and the first since Jackie Lyles in 2014.
- Irizarry had a monster performance herself for Methodist as she recorded a double-double, the first of her career, with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds (career-high).
- Also accomplishing a personal milestone was Melissa D'Oleo. With her three-assist game, she has surpassed 200 career assists. Along with Irizarry, who reached the same milestone earlier this season, they are first pair of Monarchs to reach 200+ assists in same season since Zan Messer & Ashley Harris during the 2007-08 season.
