Methodist Takes Final Game at Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga.  After dropping two games against the Piedmont Lions on Sunday, the Methodist baseball team returned to Loudermilk Field in search of redemption on Monday. Recording 12 hits, the Monarchs defeated the Lions 5-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With Anthony Sarbanes starting on the mound for Methodist, the first three Piedmont batters all hit fly outs in the bottom of the first. In the top of the second, Brandon Mauger batted in Banks Hartman from second base to give Methodist the first run of the game.
  • In the bottom of the third, Piedmont's leadoff batter reached base on an error. The next two batters earned hits that each drove in a run, putting the Lions ahead 2-1.
  • The Monarchs took advantage of two Piedmont errors in the top of the fourth while also recording three hits (including a Banks Engle triple) to score three runs.
  • Despite no hits for the Monarchs in the seventh, four Methodist batters drew walks, walking in a run to make the score 5-2.
  • Piedmont pieced together four hits in the bottom of the ninth to score two runs, but Methodist's Chase Carroll was able to force the final two batters out to end the ballgame.
STAT FACTS
  • Jackson Deal and Banks Hartman both went 3-for-5 on the day. Hartman finished the three-game Piedmont series a team-best 7-for-13.
  • Anthony Sarbanes tossed a career-high six innings, dishing out three strikeouts while allowing just one earned run.
