Monarchs Split Doubleheader with Mary Washington

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Hosting the Eagles of Mary Washington, the Methodist softball team scored four runs in each game of a doubleheader, earning one win and one loss on Sunday. The Monarchs posted a 4-2 victory in game one before dropping game two by a score of 7-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Kiersten Margoupis struck out two batters in the top of the first, then in the bottom of the inning, Alyssa Rivas doubled to left-center field to score Alexandra Edwards from first.
  • The Eagles scored one run of their own in the top of the second, which was unearned. The score remained tied until the top of the fifth, when Mary Washington put another run on the board to go ahead 2-1.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Edwards scored from second base on a fielding error by the Eagles, tying the game at 2-2. The Monarchs took a 4-2 lead in the sixth when Haley Downes stole home, then Edwards launched a double into left field that scored Virginia Crews.
  • The Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but with one out already recorded, the Monarchs produced a double play when Edwards caught a fly ball to center field, then threw the lead runner out at home to end the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Loading the bases in the top of the first, the Eagles took an early lead when Emma Schieda blasted a base-clearing double to left-center field. Methodist answered with one run in the bottom frame when Edwards scored, unearned.
  • After a scoreless second inning in which the Monarchs left two runners on base, Mary Washington added two more runs to its total in the top of the third, then another in the top of the fifth.
  • Edwards led off the bottom of the fifth with a double. She later scored along with Amanda Blackburn, bringing the Monarchs within three runs of the Eagles.
  • An RBI by Edwards in the sixth inning made the score 6-4, but the Eagles tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh, the Methodist was unable to match.
NUMBERS
  • Kiersten Margoupis tossed five strikeouts in seven innings to earn the win in game one. It's her fifth complete-game victory of the season, and her pitching record improves to 7-1.
  • Alexandra Edwards went to work at the plate, batting 6-for-8 with two RBIs and four runs scored.
UP NEXT
The Monarchs are back in action on Saturday, March 23 when they host Mary Baldwin in a USA South doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
