HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Monarchs got off to a slow start in doubles play as each of the three doubles duos fell behind in the early going. The No. 2 combo of Harry Crokam (Fr.) and Decklan Rayner (Fr.) fell 8-3 and were closely followed by the No. 3 team of Wills Belser (So.) and Hayden Holloway (Jr.) who also lost 8-3. The No. 1 doubles duo of Matthew Hurley (So.) and Drew Guarnieri (Jr.) fell behind 4-7, but stormed back to push the match to a tiebreaker and win 8-7, 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
  • Down 2-1 after doubles, Methodist needed four of the six singles matches to win. The Monarchs started strong at each line as Hurley captured the first set at No. 1 and Crokam won the first set at No. 4.
  • The Falcons captured the first two singles matches as No. 5 Rayner and No. 6 Christian Tihanovich (Fr.) lost in straight sets. However, the Monarchs were not done. Guarnieri captured the second set 6-1 to force a third set at No. 2 singles while Hurley finished off his opponent at No. 1 singles and Crokam won at No. 4 singles in a second set tiebreaker to close the gap to 4-3 in the team match score.
  • However, the team fell short as Pfeiffer won the decisive set at No. 2 singles and captured No. 3 singles in a highly-contested second set.
