Methodist Completes Comeback with Some Ninth Inning Magic

MISENHEIMER, N.C.  Methodist University baseball returned to USA South Athletic Conference action on Friday, April 19, with a trip to Pfeiffer University. Trailing 6-4 heading into the ninth inning, the Monarchs rallied and registered three runs to defeat the Falcons 7-6.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. Pfeiffer, 7-6
Records: Methodist 16-19 (8-8 USA South), Pfeiffer 15-16 (7-9)
Location: Joe Ferebee Field; Misenheimer, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It took three innings before the first run of the ballgame was recorded, with Jackson Deal driving in the Methodist run. Austin Rinzel led the inning off with a single before getting into scoring position by stealing second base. A couple of pitches later, Deal singled back up the middle to allow the speedy Rinzel to score.
  • In the bottom half of the third, it only took one Pfeiffer batter to tie up the scoreboard with a solo homerun. Some batters later, the Falcons filled the bases, a hit and two hit by pitches, before back-to-back hits drove in three more runs. Pfeiffer finished up its five-run inning with a sacrifice fly.
  • Down 5-1, the Monarchs tallied a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to get within one run. Tristen Melvin and Deal each drove in a run, on an RBI single, while Caleb Rogers worked a bases loaded walk.
  • The Falcons added an additional run, 6-4, in the sixth as well, off another sac fly.
  • Fast forward to the ninth, Hunter Hollman started the inning off by reaching base on a Pfeiffer error. Up next was Banks Hartman, who doubled down the left field line to put Methodist runners on second and third, followed by Banks Engle, who brought in Hollman with an RBI single. After a Rogers' sac bunt to move up the runners, Caleb Green came up clutch and poked a two-out, two-RBI, base hit through the infield to give the Monarchs their first lead since the third inning.
  • Methodist called upon Chase Carroll to protect the one-run game in the bottom of the ninth. He got the first batter to foul out before giving up a double. The next batter flew out to right field but the runner was able to advance to third. With two-outs now, Carroll closed out the game by catching a come backer on the mound.
STAT FACTS
  • Five different Methodist batters recorded two base hits, along with Deal and Greene also registering two RBIs.
  • After the Falcons tallied five runs off of five hits through the first 2.1 innings, the Monarch trio of Brandon Humphreys, Brice Herring, and Carroll limited Pfeiffer's offense to just one run, on three hits, during the final 6.2 innings. Herring was credited with his second victory of the season.
  • The win snaps a five-game losing streak for Methodist.
UP NEXT
Methodist will play Pfeiffer in a conference double header on Saturday, with the first game starting at 1 PM.
